The Dotterel Chardonnay 2015
The New Zealand dotterel/tutuwhatu is a small shorebird endemic to New Zealand’s sandy beaches and sandspits. The dotterel has a special habit of turning up in the most surprising locations on Waiheke Island – very much like the small boutique vineyards that Waiheke is world-renowned for.
This Chardonnay is locally sourced from Waiheke vines, vines that have the same resilience and tenacity of the distinctive dotterel. Aromas of grapefruit, melon and white peach are complemented by a hint of toasty oak and flinty minerality.
Early and excellent flowering and fruit set was followed by cool conditions over December. This was followed by a long, warm, Indian summer, enabling the fruit to hang out on the vine producing unusually powerful flavour development for an elegantly lean body.
