In Maori mythology tipua is a shape-shifter with a capricious nature – not unlike the climactic factors that set apart a good vintage and a great one.
Within any vintage – good or great – there is always a varietal that transcends; hallowed by an unseen hand. Tipua is made from a small parcel of that blessed varietal. The bouquet shows, violets, liquorice, white pepper, and a hint of wood smoke. The palate has super concentration with silky tannins and integrated acidity. While the wine can be consumed now it will continue to improve until 2020.
Spring was a delight and bud-burst progressed nicely. The weather over flowering and fruit-set was settled and allowed for a fair but balanced crop. The summer period was beautiful with little rain, and warm days and nights. There was a spell of light rain before harvest to aid complete physiological ripeness at harvest.
